Two U-High debate students, sophomores Karina Hans and Michelle Tart, competed at a tournament at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Jan. 2-4, but did not place.
While the tournament was competitive, Michelle felt as though she gained valuable experience through the competition.
“There were definitely some moments where I felt a little lost, but it was really enlightening overall,” Michelle said.
Last year, as ninth graders, both Michelle and Karina participated as novice members of the debate team, transitioning to varsity as sophomores. Michelle felt prepared by her novice year of debate.
“Novice year, lots of people don’t know how to debate yet, so it was mostly about learning, and now it feels more competitive,” Michelle said.
Michelle felt the Tennessee tournament gave her the opportunity to reflect on her past year in debate and realize why she is an avid participant.
Michelle said, “I had a lot of moments of laughing, and reflecting on why I do this activity and why I love it.”
