The U-High math team placed first at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regionals on Feb. 28, and had the second highest score in Illinois. Among the many group and individual awards the team received at regionals, three students earned perfect scores and three teams earned first place in both the regional competition and state.
Head Coach David Hartigan is proud of how the team placed, especially given their placement in Division 3AA, which is much more competitive and features larger high schools.
“I think that they did really well,” Mr. Hartigan said. “We placed first in the region, in every single event, with the exception of orals, where we finished second by one point, which was a really great showing across the board.”
Junior Tinson Xu received a perfect score and was part of the Algebra II team that was first in the state. Tinson attributes the team’s success to how members supported one another and worked well together.
“I’m pretty proud of our performance,” Tinson said. “We did really well at regionals, and I felt like the entire team really worked well together, and we were really cheering each other on. When we got to the awards ceremony, we were really supportive of each other, and I think in the team competitions, everyone was working together well and generally having a great time.”
