What ideas, projects or initiatives do you have for next year? What is your main goal?
My main goal for next year is to leave a positive, lasting impact at Lab by increasing student satisfaction and wellness. Ultimately, the Lab Community is represented by the student body, and the role of Student Council is to cater to its needs. Three ideas I have for next year are limiting homework and tests during co-curricular weeks, increasing seating such as bean bags, couches, and tables in Gordon Parks for free periods, and allowing students to buy sports merchandise, regardless of if they are on the team or not, to cheer on their favorite sports teams and increase school spirit. Of course, these aren’t all my ideas. As a Student Council member, I also want to hear the student body’s concerns, increasing transparency so that we can build a proper bridge between students and administration.
What experiences, skills and other qualifications make you a good candidate for this position?
I’ve been on Student Council for the past 2 years, learning the ins and outs of the Lab community and gaining valuable skills along the way. I’ve proposed multiple bills to improve students’ quality of life, such as the recycling bill and a cafeteria food app bill, which is still in development. Outside of Student Council, I’ve also been an active member of the U-High community, participating in leadership roles in both clubs and athletics. My positions have taught me invaluable leadership skills, which are crucial to being an all-school president. I’ve also built strong connections with other students in the student body as well as faculty, a key component of what a Student Council member should do. But most importantly, I am passionate about Student Council and everything it stands for. I love Lab, and I think Student Council is a perfect opportunity for me to give back to such a great community.
How do you kind of plan on being the voice of students while working in conjunction with faculty and admin?
I truly believe that Student Council should be the platform for students to express their thoughts about Lab, whether positive or negative, so that we can create the best high school experience for everyone. I plan to listen to student concerns by collecting thoughts through surveys, forums, and even casual conversations with other students, something I can do because of my strong connections with students across grades and friend groups. At the same time, I will work with faculty and administration to communicate student needs and wants, finding solutions that both address student concerns and align with the school’s goals. Over the past two years, I have built relationships based on trust where students know I’m advocating for them, and the faculty and administration know I am bringing thoughtful, constructive ideas. I hope to extend these relationships if elected next year.
